Spring Term Year 1 – One The Move
Languages, Literacy and Communication
We will be asking the children to prepare an oracy presentation about a special journey.
We will be learning how to give and follow directions.
We will be learning how to ask and answer specific questions in order to clarify understanding.
We will be doing lots of role-play & drama to develop our story telling & writing skills.
We will continue with our group Guided Reading sessions using ‘Bug Club’ and a range of suitable texts. The children will be learning to apply a range of reading strategies to develop their reading skills.
We will be focussing on non –fiction, information texts and using the WWW to locate information. We will be learning how to use a simple contents page, an index & a glossary. These sessions are structured to suit the needs of individual children.
We will be continuing with our daily phonics sessions based on ‘Letters and Sounds’ (www.letters-and-sounds.com)

We will be further developing the children’s comprehension skills & understanding of a range of texts. They will be learning prediction and sequencing skills and developing their knowledge about vocabulary.
We will be sending home books weekly and will be encouraging the children to use their ‘Bug Club’ accounts to further their reading skills and comprehension.
We will be developing the children’s writing skills to develop the use of capital letters, full stops, question marks, exclamation marks and commas.
We will be focussing on spelling the 100 high frequency words and the tricky words linked to the ‘Letters & Sounds’ phases.
We will be continuing to develop correct cursive letter formation and developing the children’s handwriting fluency.
Year 2 children will be learning to join their letters.
We will be learning to write a range of information texts based on our topic, using text specific language.
Our creative writing will be story based and linked to our topic. We will learning to write a story with a beginning, middle & end. We will be learning to use a range of interesting and imaginative language.
We will be using ‘Tedi Twt’ to help us with our welsh sentence patterns.
We will be learning to speak, read and write simple Welsh sentence patterns, questions & answers.

Maths and Numeracy
Count reliably at least to 20 objects.
Count in 10s to 100.
Count forwards & backwards from any number within 100.
Read & write numbers to at least 20.
Use number facts within 10 – doubling & halving & number bonds to 10.
Count in 2’s to 100.
Compare and order numbers to at least 20.
Addition & subtraction facts to at least 5.
Work out 1 more/10 more of any number within 20.
Use non-standard units to measure weight/mass.
Money – use different combinations of coins to pay for items up to 20p.

Our Humanities focus this term is Geography.
We will be learning how to use simple maps, atlases and globes. We will be looking at different continents, countries and ways to get to them.
We will be learning simple mapping skills.
Travelling – distances and journeys.
We will focus on where we live and the geographical features, customs and traditions of Wales. .
We will be focusing at Egypt as a contrasting country and learning lots of fun and interesting facts about Egypt. The children will be exploring the similarities & differences between the two countries.
Health and Well being
As our topic is ‘on the move,’ we will be focusing on the importance of exercise. This term we will be focussing on PESS dance, include different shapes, rhythms and forms of travel in movement and make use of different parts of the body and moments of stillness and held balances.

Science and Technology
In Science we will be learning about physical forces – pushes, pulls & friction.
We will be learning about magnetism. We will be conducting simple investigations. The children will be asking & answering questions, making obervations, collecting information/data and reflecting & evaluating their work.
We will be extending our learning with an ‘XL Wales’ workshop on these topics.
In ICT we will be continuing to use JiT5 to develop the children’s ICT skills:
Paint – using a range of paint tools to create pictures.
Write – Developing our word processing skills.
Animation – Creating a simple animation linked to our topic.
Turtle – to develop our position, movement & direction skills.
Data Hadling – in conjunction with our Maths & Numeracy work.
We will be using educational Apps & games to support the children’s learning.
Our artwork will be linked to our Numeracy work on ‘Shape & Space'(symmetry and half/quater turns etc)
Our artwork will link to drawing the movement of the human body.
Art work will be linked to our work on Egypt – Egyptian drawings & hieroglyphics, creating an Egyptian decorative collar.
Art work linked to Wales – the study of a Welsh artist.
We will be focussing on Welsh dance in conjuction with St David’s Day.
This term we will be having world religion week, where the children will be learning about the 7 main religions.
We will also be learning about the Easter Story and the significant of symbols.
